There are two absolute truths that every seasoned project manager knows:

1. Adding people to a late project only makes it later.

2. the person in in charge of maintaining the dependency schedule will eventually have to be shot for the good of the team.

Our principals have produced over 300 products. From Pert and CPM to Extreme Programming, we have project managers with over 20 years of certification.

We have managed project that spanned 12 times zones, projects with over 100 contributors, coordinated the efforts of 5 different companies, 2 of which were huge multinationals, restructured a project with 87 staff members that was 19 months late and delivered it with a team of 8 five months later. The shortest project effort was the development of a shrink-wrap educational product in 37 days. (we even rented the trucks to deliver the boxes to the Distributor’s warehouse.)

Understanding

Small is better

Most large projects should be scheduled as sub-projects with teams of 4-6 people. How you spread the critical resources is the key to success.

There are no little tasks

A major problem with most project management systems is microscheduling. The dependency trees get too complex and the schedules get exaderated.

There are no big tasks

Anything that takes more than 2 weeks has another task hidden inside of it.

Late but on-time

The first sign of a project going south is the deadline that is met, but without all of the comitted parts. Those missing tasks usually have a snowball effect.

Meetings, bloody meetings

When overhead goes over 4 hours a week, its usually a sign that positive status reports are replacing actual accomplishments

Shared experience?

Three people with 2 years experience each is not the same as one person with 6 years.
